Posted on December, 2024

The holiday season is a time for joy, community, and tradition—and at Addis NOLA, we’re excited to invite you to immerse yourself in the rich cultural celebrations of I need and Epiphany (Timket). These vibrant festivities offer a unique opportunity to experience the warmth and spirituality of Ethiopian heritage right here in New Orleans.

Ethiopian Christmas (Genna): A Celebration of Light and Joy

Ethiopian Christmas is celebrated on January 7th because the Ethiopian Orthodox Church follows the ancient Julian calendar. This date highlights Ethiopia’s rich cultural and religious heritage, preserved through centuries of tradition. Observed on Tahsas 29 in the Ethiopian calendar, corresponding to January 7 in the Gregorian calendar, Genna is a deeply spiritual and festive occasion. Rooted in Ethiopia’s unique Orthodox Christian traditions, Genna is celebrated with midnight church services, traditional hymns, and heartfelt prayers.

Families come together to enjoy lavish feasts featuring beloved dishes like doro wat, injera, and various spiced stews such as tibs, beg wot, and alcha beg fifit. Traditional breads like dfo dabo symbolize abundance and togetherness, while the air fills with the aromas of roasted coffee beans, spices, tej, and tällä. Coffee ceremonies and traditional drinks play an essential role in the day’s events, emphasizing connection and hospitality.

At Addis NOLA, we’ll recreate the magic of Genna with a special celebration on January 7th. Join us for a feast that highlights the flavors and traditions of Ethiopian Christmas. From savory dishes to the comforting sweetness of fresh-baked holiday treats, we’ll bring the spirit of Genna to life. To further enrich the experience, we’ll host a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, showcasing this cherished ritual's artistry and communal essence. Learn about the history of coffee as it originated in Ethiopia, connecting the past with the present.

Ethiopian Christmas is more than a celebration—it’s an opportunity to reflect on the universal themes of light, love, and renewal. The traditions surrounding Genna are steeped in symbolism, such as the playing of a traditional game called "Genna," similar to field hockey, said to have been enjoyed by shepherds on the night Christ was born. These customs create a tapestry of faith and festivity that welcomes everyone to join in.

The festivities will conclude with a vibrant Ethiopian Christmas party starting at 9:30 PM. Don’t miss this chance to celebrate with us. Reserve your spot now to secure your place at this unforgettable event.

Timket (Epiphany): A Celebration of Renewal

Timket, celebrated on January 19th and lasting three days, begins with a colorful eve procession and ends with a day of joyful festivities. This sacred occasion is renowned for its exuberant singing, traditional attire, and the sprinkling of holy water as a symbol of renewal and blessings. The atmosphere comes alive with music and dance, creating a communal spirit of joy and reflection.

Timket holds a profound spiritual significance, commemorating the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. The rituals often include the procession of the Tabot, a replica of the Ark of the Covenant, carried to a nearby body of water for the blessing ceremony. This act symbolizes purification and renewal, drawing parallels to the universal human desire for new beginnings.

At Addis NOLA, we’ll honor Timket with exclusive cocktail specials inspired by Ethiopian flavors. Our expert mixologists will craft drinks that evoke the spirit of celebration and renewal, blending traditional ingredients with a modern twist. From tej- and coffee-inspired cocktails to refreshing creations infused with Ethiopian spices, our Timket specials promise to delight your senses.

Additionally, we’ll host a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, offering guests an immersive experience of Ethiopia’s vibrant culture and hospitality. Whether it’s your first encounter with this cherished ritual or a chance to reconnect with familiar traditions, our Timket celebrations will leave a lasting impression.
